Late M.V.K. Shetty
Dr. M Vasanth Kumar Shetty, born on May 8, 1924, in Mambettu, Udupi Taluk, within the former Madras Presidency, received his early education in Mulki, Mangalore, Poona, and Miraj Medical School. After completing his graduation from Madras University, he pursued further studies in Radiology at Madras Medical College, including an internship and post-graduate diploma.
Driven by a passion for advancing his skills, Dr. Shetty embarked on a transformative journey to the USA for specialized training in Paediatric Radiology under Dr. John Caffey, a pioneer in the field. His rigorous three-year training culminated in successfully passing the American Radiology Board Exam in 1964.
Returning to India, Dr. Shetty assumed prestigious positions as Professor of Paediatric Radiology at Madras Medical College and Chief of Radiology at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, India’s largest children’s hospital.
Dr. Shetty’s contributions extended beyond clinical practice; he actively engaged in academia and professional organizations. His international engagements included representing India at conferences like the International Congress of Radiology and the American Paediatric Association meeting.
Recognized for his expertise, Dr. Shetty served as an examiner for various university programs and contributed approximately thirty papers to academic journals. In 1980, he received honors from the Indian Academy of Paediatrics for his outstanding teaching. Even after retiring from government service, Dr. Shetty continued to enrich the field, heading the Radiology and Imaging Section at the Dr. K M Rai Memorial Medical Centre in Madras.

Professor Arcot Gajaraj, formerly the Professor and Director of the Barnard Institute of Radiology and Cancer at Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital Chennai, as well as a Senior Consultant and Director of Radiology Education at Apollo Hospitals and Dr. Rai Memorial Medical Centre in Chennai, stands as a revered educationist and distinguished radiologist in India. Regarded as one of the pioneering figures in radiology, Professor Gajaraj not only witnessed the significant advancements in the field but also diligently kept pace with the rapid technological developments over the past four decades.
His illustrious career began with a BSc from Madras Christian College and MBBS from Stanley Medical College, followed by specialized training equivalent to an MD degree in Radiology at the upgraded Barnard Institute of Radiology and Cancer. He served as a lecturer and radiologist at Stanley Medical College and Hospital before ascending to the position of Professor and Head of the Department at the institute.
Professor Gajaraj’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice; he introduced the Diploma in Radiodiagnosis at Madras University and served as Director of the Barnard Institute of Radiology, Head of the Department of Radiology & Imaging at Apollo Hospital Chennai, and a founding member of ICRI. He has been honored with numerous awards and distinctions, including FACR, FRCR, DSC, and FAMAS. Additionally, he held prestigious positions such as President of IRIA and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Chairman of ICRI, while also serving as a PG examiner for major universities across India, including AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER..
